Hey everyone!
So we're supposed to discuss a little on the blog, before we do it in class...
So our topic (Ana's and mine) is: Caim: Religion vs. Atheism.
We intend it to be a discussion not only about Saramago's new romance, but mostly about the differences between religious people and atheists points of view.
With that in mind, I'd like to ask some questions:
1. Have you read the book or any particular part of it, or heard any of Saramago's remarks about the Bible?
2. If so, do you find them disrespectfull or do you generally agree with him?
3. What do you think should be the role of religion in people's lives?
4. What do you think an atheist is?
5. Are atheists amoral?
...
I think that'll do for now...

Dani here ;D
ReplyDeleteWell, I've never read this book but I remember all the buzz about it on the news.
I don't think Mr. Saramago was disrespectful.
Religion and atheism are two very touch subjects... I don't know what to think of it. Yet... :)
For me, every person has his own oppinion about religion. As Mr. Saramago is a popular person, at least away from Portugal, his oppinion about the bible "shoked" the whole priesters and people. If I would say something like that on television, nobody would listen to me and say: "who is this guy?!?".
ReplyDeleteFortunately, in this culture, we can choose if we want to be religious or not.
I am not, nether my parents, maybe that´s why i´m not.
I ve never read the book, but I ve read some other of Saramago's books and i see him as a literary genious so i believe that his comentary about bible is a critical opinion of a critic of literature nothing more, he wasn't intending to offend.
ReplyDeleteHe is religious but even if he wasn´t he is just a conscious man talking about a book he read without taking parts just in an inpartial way.
